Rocky Mountain Roller Derby once again agrees that "It's too hot for this much stress", and so we are going to try to roll out our Sensory Friendly format for an August mix-up.
Our "Sensory Friendly" format is a WFTDA-ruleset game, but with a few modifications meant to make the environment less overwhelming: 1) Audience members will be encouraged to golf clap or provide jazz snaps, but no loud applause or cheering. 2) There will be no in-house announcers, only streaming. The stream audio will used for an in-house feed the audience can join via headphones. 3) Refs are discouraged from using whistles unless absolutely necessary to get a skater's attention. Loudly saying/shouting "tweet" at skaters and then proceeding with standard Team/Color + Number queing should be attempted at least twice before resorting to the whistle. 4) The Jam Timer will be verbalizing some form of "tweet" in place of a standard whistle, and some form of "wheeeeeeee-ooooooooooooup" for rolling whistles. Refs are encouraged to also loudly say "tweet tweet tweet tweet" for call offs/echoes at the end of each jam. 5) Because of this, hand signals and verbal cues must be slower and deliberate whenever possible to ensure clear communication.
After the calm, easy-going sensory friendly experience, Rocky has also said "Sun's out, guns out, LET'S PARTY!" with a matchup between Project Mayhem and Cheyenne Roller Derby. Watch Rocky skaters try to get their wiggles out after having to behave all morning.
Games will be at 2 and 5:30, call time for officials will be 30 minutes prior to each game.
